[Glossary](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary) 2. [Cacheable](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Cacheable) # Cacheable A **cacheable** response is an HTTP response that can be cached, that is stored to be retrieved and used later, saving a new request to the server. Not all HTTP responses can be cached; these are the constraints for an HTTP response to be cacheable: * The method used in the request is _cacheable_ , that is either a [`GET`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/GET) or a [`HEAD`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/HEAD) method. A response to a [`POST`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/POST) or [`PATCH`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/PATCH) request can also be cached if freshness is indicated and the [`Content-Location`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Headers/Content-Location) header is set, but this is rarely implemented. For example, Firefox does not support it ([Firefox bug 109553](https://bugzil.la/109553)). Other methods, like [`PUT`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/PUT) or [`DELETE`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/DELETE) are not cacheable and their result cannot be cached. * The status code of the response is _known_ by the application caching, and is _cacheable_. The following status codes are cacheable: [`200`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/200), [`203`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/203), [`204`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/204), [`206`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/206), [`300`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/300), [`301`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/301), [`404`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/404), [`405`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/405), [`410`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/410), [`414`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/414), and [`501`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Status/501). * There are no specific headers in the response, like [`Cache-Control`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Headers/Cache-Control), with values that would prohibit caching. Note that some requests with non-cacheable responses to a specific URI may invalidate previously cached responses from the same URI. For example, a [`PUT`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/PUT) to `/pageX.html` will invalidate all cached responses to [`GET`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/GET) or [`HEAD`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/HEAD) requests to `/pageX.html`. When both the method of the request and the status of the response are cacheable, the response to the request can be cached: The response to a [`PUT`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/PUT) request cannot be cached. Moreover, it invalidates cached data for requests to the same URI using [`HEAD`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/HEAD) or [`GET`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/GET) methods: The presence of the [`Cache-Control`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Headers/Cache-Control) header with a particular value in the response can prevent caching: ## In this article * [See also](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Cacheable#see_also) ## [See also](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Cacheable#see_also) * Details about [methods and caching](https://httpwg.org/specs/rfc9110.html#rfc.section.9.2.3) are provided in the HTTP specification. * Description of common cacheable methods: [`GET`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/GET), [`HEAD`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/HEAD) * Description of common non-cacheable methods: [`PUT`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/PUT), [`DELETE`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/DELETE), often [`POST`](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Methods/POST)
